Getting Your Cat Ready for Spring
Another Chore! OK, So what do we have to do to get our cats ready for spring?
Well, we need to apply flea treatments for one. Fleas and mosquitoes breed freely as soon as the weather warms up, so now is the time to prepare your cat. You can avoid a nasty infestation with a little prevention now. Spot treatments, area treatments like "All-in-One" and get some Premise Spray to keep them out of the house. Once you get fleas, you will most likely be fighting them through the summer and into fall. That will detract from your enjoyment of the season, and your cats will be miserable. So, a little prevention is certainly helpful right now.
How about cleaning the litter box completely? Pour out the old "clumping" litter and clean the box. This is a good time to check the box for any soft plastic, scratches and staining. If any are present, you might want to replace the box.
As the weather warms up, your cats will shed a little more fur, getting rid of that thick undercoat. This can set up allergies for you and those around you. It can also cause hairballs for kitty. Get out your FURminator and give kitty a few strokes now. That will make cleaning up easier, too. If kitty has gotten any mats over the winter, now is the time to cut them off. Trim claws, while you are at it, so that while you are doing all this grooming, you don't end up slashed! ;)
Kitty's bed is probably full of hair and dirt by now. If you can wash it, then do so, but be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for cleaning. If it can't be washed, maybe you can "save" it by putting in a pad. However, many places offer sales on beds this time of year, so why not take advantage of the sales and get a new bed for your feline friends?
Lastly, people often have allergies to cats. This is from a protein in cat's saliva. All that loose hair that's collected over the winter may be making the indoor air pretty hard on allergy sufferers. So, change out the filters and vacuum completely.
Hey, you know your grandmother did spring cleaning, and now you know why!
