Winter Kitty Issues January 02, 2008 |
||
| Hi there, , OOPS! Once again, I let a deadline slip and the newsletter went out before it was ready. I'm so sorry! New Year's Day was a busy one for me & I let time slip away.... Here is the "true" newsletter as it was meant to be. What's in This Issue:A quick list of what's in this issue:
Updates to the siteNews and updates:I've been doing a lot of "housekeeping" on FLOC in the last week or so. If you are subscribed to the RSS feed, you will notice that pages you didn't know existed are popping up. I've been rewriting and cleaning. I'm checking links to make sure things work. Breed Picture Books has been totally updated. All the links died at once, so all the books highlighted on that page are new. I don't think there are as many as before, but what is there is working right. As I find more, I'll add them. Other pages that have been cleaned up include: Careers with Animals Careers with Animals part 2 Careers with Animals page 3 FAQ-Fear Cat Behaviors and Intelligence Allergies to Cats Allergy Helping Products Why Do Cats Sleep in the Littebox? Airline Approved Carriers How to Choose a Petsitter How to be a Petsitter About the site Cat Design Bags and Totes Contact Page I am the webmistress for a site that is not mine, and I'm in the middle of their quarterly mailing, so I have not been paying as much attention to FLOC as I normally would right now. Also, I've begun a new site, and I'm getting the content to read the way I want it to read, and to look the way I want it to look. It is a totally separate venture, but it is pet related. When I'm ready to announce it, you will see something here. Holiday Kitty Contest Voting UpdatesHoliday Kitty Contest Voting Update:Winner Is: LUCKY! You folks said Lucky kitty was the most festive Christmas Kitty. Thank you for your great participation! Lucky's owner gets coupons at Pets Warehouse, up to $25 savings at Only Natural Pet Supplies, cat food; and other deals and steals. The way it works is that the winner gets special "coupon codes" for use during checkout to take advantage of the savings. The participating merchants agree to give the winner these savings but I can't give them to everyone because of the deep discounts-only the one person. I don't even get the coupons until I announce the winner! The January kitty contest is about "New Year's Hi-jinx." Any kitties using too much catnip? Wearing New Year's hats? Mixed up with streamers? Celebrations all around! Photo deadline January 10; voting deadline January 29. You can reply to this newsletter with the photos attached to your email. Winter Kitty IssuesYour kitty gets really bored in the winter time! If your cat lives outdoors, it gets really cold!So, lets look at these issues and see if there is something we can do to help. Boredom: A cat can become depressed in winter, just like people. There is nothing to do and nothing to look at. It is so gray and dreary outside. You can help by putting up a bird feeder and attracting wild birds. Once you do this, however, be sure to keep the feeder filled so that the birds won't starve. The activity around the feeder will amuse your cat and help to keep her interested in the outdoors. Kitty DVDs are another way to counteract boredom, but it means that if the electricity goes out, your cat will be bored again. Play with kitty a lot, distract her from the bed, and keep her moving. Devise games. Have I told you about the cats' house lately? They've done some amazing things to keep their tribe active and interested. Their website is stuck in update mode, but even the front page gives you some ideas. They have a book you can purchase, but it looks like the link isn't working at the moment. Probably has to do with holiday busy-ness, so watch them. Outdoor Kitty Gets Cold and Wet: Outdoors, the weather is heading toward the coldest time of year. Be sure kitty has a warm and dry place to wait out the storms. If you don't have garage space, then try to provide shelter that's elevated. In some parts of the country, there has been a lot of flooding, so you want to keep the shelters off the wet ground. It keeps them from rotting, and keeps kitty safe, too. Put cardboard on the bottom, which provides wind blockage and a little bit of insulation. On top of this, you can put old towels or blankets. This combination will keep kitty warm and dry. You can change the cardboard when it gets wet and wash the textiles in the washer when they get soiled. Don't use electric pads or blankets because a cat's claws can short out the electrical wires. Use a light bulb or heat lamp at a distance, instead. Specials and CouponsHere are some interesting links and products available right now. Use these links for a quick jump to the items:The page of outdoor cat shelters on the website ![]() These folks have quite a variety of unique cat items. Worth checking out!
This newsletter is produced for YOU, the reader. Please let me know if you want to see anything in here that hasn't been covered for a while. You can view all the past issues and look deeper into the new information I've found.
