Correcting Bad Cat Behavior

Correcting Bad Cat Behavior is important to the harmony of the home.

Correcting Objectionable Behavior

Cat by SFLLAW
Any cat behavior at all can be objectionable to some people. However, if you are reading this, you are not one of "those people."

Most behaviors can be corrected once you understand your cat's reason for it. If your cat is using the litter box sometimes and not others, check to see if the litter box needs cleaning. If your cat will urinate outside the box but use it for other things, perhaps your home needs to be deodorized. Your cat may be marking your home against an intruder. Or, your cat may be telling you that he has a urinary tract infection, or the cat down the street is in heat, or simply that he doesn't like the type of litter you are providing for him. So, there are many causes for each behavior your cat exhibits. The cause needs to be corrected before the behavior can be changed.

*** I strongly recommend that you subscribe to the CatLover Magazine (our eZine).

This topic and related topics are discussed about every three to four weeks in that journal. If you have a specific concern, submit your question and it will be addressed as soon as possible.

As with all training related issues, the person needs to be trained first. Once the person understands how to train their cat and how their demeanor toward it affects the cat, then one can begin to train the cat. Please read the Psychology and Training page before continuing.

Types of bad behavior include:

  • Messing outside the litter box
  • Continual appearance of the cat in an area it is not allowed (bed, counter, and furniture)
  • Eating plants
  • Scratching furniture, rugs or other items
  • Wool sucking
  • Spraying

Most of these are simple to correct. Sometimes, there are activities you can do with your cat, or changes to the environment that will correct the behaviors. Often, simple redirection is all that is required, other times a second litter box or trip to the vet are indicated.

Reasons a cat may misbehave include:

  • Disease
  • Other animals
  • Dirty Litter box
  • Jealousy of a person or other pet, or possessiveness
  • Neglect or Abuse
  • The cat needs to be spayed or neutered

These reasons are easy to figure out, and can be a lifesaver for the cat owner. Once you understand your cat's reason for the behavior, the correction is quite easy and simple.

However, if your pet is neglected or abused, you may have a longer period of readjustment than you expected. Jealousy and possessiveness need to be handled differently from the rest of these causes, and you may need a carrier or closed door to separate the animals.

The more serious behaviors may include:

  • Peeing in your bed or defecating in your shoes
  • Aggressive behaviors such as biting or scratching, including attacking with malice
  • Destruction of property

In these cases, you will need to discuss the behaviors with a "Cat Whisperer" to solve the problem. These behaviors can all be caused by several things and need different solutions depending on the cause.
