Kitty In Love

When Kitty is in love, there is lots of strange behavior going on. A female may chirp and wriggle on the floor, and a male may spray. Even spayed and neutered cats may exhibit these behaviors; observe:
Spooning Kitties

My cats Beasley and Queenie seem to be in love with each other. I thought the situation would take care of itself when I got her spayed but that didn't help.

Beasley still wants to mount her every day, and when I get on him to stop, she walks up to him and puts her tail in his face. He calls for her and she walks over to him and flops down on the floor, looking for all the world like a woman in love! Last night, he dragged a feather toy all over the house so she would play with him.

Queenie has taken to sleeping with Beasley on chairs or my bed. She wants to be on my lap when she's not loving on Beasley. They are truly in love with each other!

I saw this coming when Queenie moved in. When Queenie, Fluffy (ne' Pretty Girl) and Bugs came to live with us. Queenie made friends with Princess and Princess liked her back. Princess and Queenie would play together on the bed, and Princess would snuggle and wash Queenie several times a day.

After Queenie got Princess snowed, she moved on to Beasley. I think she had a crush on Beasley from the first! She started going up to him and putting her hiney in his face and when she started having heats, she would go to Beasley freely. He would grab her neck and she would flop over. He never mounted her, (he's neutered) but always tried. He would hold on to her for a few minutes and let go. You can tell he's very frustrated, but he keeps trying! He gives this annoyed yelp when he gives up.

Finally, Queenie got spayed, but the behaviors continued. I wouldn't let him near her for a couple of weeks because the vet said it might cause Queenie internal injuries. So, now the danger time is passed, and they started up again. It's like they both knew about letting her heal. She will go to him when he is asleep or he calls her. The rest of the time, she's either sleeping or on my lap.

Beasley will grab his "string" which was his first toy with me. He used to pick up the string toy and meow pitifully, and bring it to me. Now, he picks up the string toy, meows pitifully and cuts the sound short with a sharp end, and she comes running. If I call him and try to play with the string toy with him, he ignores me or runs away. He's looking for Queenie. I'm SO jealous! I miss my lover-boy! Beasley still comes to me for cuddles and gives me that look of utter pleasure when I snuggle him, but he is more involved with the others than me, now.

I've never seen anything like this. I've seen females who keep their mate around for a while after mating, but once the hormones start surging, and the pregnancy becomes advanced, she would chase him away as a danger to her kittens. What do you do when the female never gets that hormonal surge? What do you do with two altered cats who insist on mating several times a day? Be grateful, is what! These two cats thankfully don't spray or have that musky smell because the mating is never completed. However, they could easily have that if they were not fixed. Beasley might still begin spraying if a male cat moves into the building - or comes to visit outside.

I've had trouble with Bugs over the year I've had her - she sometimes can't make it to the box in time. So, I have odor control products on hand. My biggest problem now is the cats sleeping in the dirty laundry and "leaking" during their sleep.
