Work with Cats

Working with cats as a pet groomer, trainer, petsitter or pet photographer offers cat lovers a unique opportunity. Check out these options and possibilities. There are valuable links to resources to help you get started in any of these careers.

As a groomer, you give baths, comb and brush cats. You may also be called upon to remove mats and apply cosmetics. Whatever might be needed to allow the cat to put its best paw forward. Groomers work with photographers, breeders and veterinarians. They are often called upon to prepare cats for cat shows. Some cats are groomed for movies and commercials. The fortunate few are groomed because they are loved. Many cats are groomed because they refuse to be brushed by their owners. Many cats prefer to chase the brush instead of letting it do the job of removing loose hair.

Cat trainers teach cats to perform simple tasks on command. They also work with cat owners to help with bad behaviors. Cat trainers are often called "Wranglers" because they handle animal actors. Animal actors work in commercials, TV and movies. Make no mistake - these animals are NOT pets. The American Humame Association carefully watches animal actors to stop cases of abuse.

A pet sitter looks after a cat while the owners are away. This is an excellent career for a cat lover. The tools to get started are minimal and good pet sitters are needed. As a pet sitter, you can expect to work most when people are traveling. This will mean limiting your summers and holiday times with family and friends because you are working.

A pet photographer takes photographs of beloved pets, grand champions and animal actors. A good photographer relies heavily on a good groomer. If the groomer's work is below-par, the photographs will also be below-par.

A nice offshoot to this is taking snapshots of your cat to a pet portrait artist. The portrait artist uses your photographs to get the basics down on a nice painting of your cat. However, a true "artist" will also want to meet your cat to capture its personality, as well as the coloring and form of your cat.

Cat trainers, wranglers, groomers and the American Humane Association, work together to protect animals actors from abuse. An animal talent agency provides venues for performing animals to work. They book the animals into the TV shows we see every week, commercials and many movies. While the animals don't earn very much, their trainers and owners sometimes can. A cat like Morris, who became a cat food icon, is rare.

A pet psychologist is a type of veterinarian. These specialized vets are certified by the American Animal Behavioral Association. They are veterinarians who have specialized in animal psychology by taking an extra year or more of schooling to achieve that certification. Also, while most veterinarians do not have an internship, these practitioners do put in that extra time.
