Asking Permission and Tattling

by Mer

Pixel all tuckered out from asking permission Nermal claiming the couch as her own

Our boy Pixel asks permission to do EVERYTHING. He came from a neglecting household where he wasn't allowed to do anything, like get on the furniture, or sit in the window sill. It was cute the first few times, but then it got really annoying when he didn't stop. We'll be trying to watch tv and he will ask permission to sit on the couch seat with us. When we tell him it is ok, he keeps asking until he's comfortable. 3 a.m. in the morning, he wants to sleep in the bed with us..."Meooowoooowooow" and we're wide awake again. He tells us when he needs to go potty, and after he goes, he asks us to flush for him and won't stop until we flush. When our other cat goes, he asks us to flush for her too. Pixel tells us when his food is down to a few bites of cereal, and when his water is stale. He tells us when Nermal is being bad, or when she hasn't asked to get in the window or on the couch...and he always looks so offended that we aren't upset that she didn't ask permission. He asks permission to eat his breakfast sausages in the morning. He asks permission to sit on top of the computer, to get on the computer desk, to sit on the chair with me, and yet he never asks to get in front of the computer screen and onto my keyboard, imagine that. He asks to go out on the balcony, and begs with the most serious look to allow him to go down and see the other kitties that come to visit him from below. It's come to the point that Nermal is jumping him for asking more than once, even she is annoyed by all of his yapping.

Even though I was laughing, I know that this behavior is offensive. Catching Pixel before he asks permission and putting him there, then snuggling and cuddling him so that he doesn't have time to ask, may help. Bodily move him to the seat when he asks to come up.

As for the bed and asking to come up, waking you in the process: I have the same issue with mine. I kick them out of the room for at least 2 nights a week so I can get a good night's sleep once in a while.

Clicker training may help a lot, too.
