Attacking me!

by Lucy
(Lewis Co., Wash)

A few months ago, we were out for a walk, with Purrcy on his harness and leash. I let him go for awhile while I got sidetracked with some weeds, and he was off! I finally found him in our woods, near to where the neighbor used to have German shepherds. His leash was tangled, and when I tried to untangle him he started growling at me and attacked my hand. Before it was over I had wounds on both hands and both legs and required a trip to urgent care. I could almost understand this episode (displaced aggression) as he was lost and scared, but just the other day while out for a walk, I again let down the leash (I usually let him wander a bit, and he was about 15ft away from me in no threatening situation when he attacked again. I had just found a mole in our mole trap (sorry to those of you who don't agree with this method) and was yelling from excitement, when he suddenly attacked my leg from behind! I had to throw a stick at him to get him off of me but he poised to attack again. Only by whistling to get my husband's attention did he back down, and eventually ran to the house....where he turns all "nicey-nice" again. What is up? He's 15, and we've been going on walks for years, but lately if I even pick him up during a walk, he starts hissing and growling at me. Is he going senile??

It sounds to me like he thinks he's walking free, and the leash getting caught set him off. Take gently, short walks on the leash and let him loose inside only. Do not let go of the leash when you are outside, or this kind of behavior will continue and increase. ~Morgen
