chewing

by Terry
(Michigan)

My cat is driving me crazy. She is chewing up my really expensive upholstered furniture. Does she not know that she is a cat? I don't have a clue about what to do. She is the type of cat that is very skittish and would freak out if I yelled at her. Help?

Is she chewing on the wood or upholstery? Might it be pica? Is there an odor to the furniture? Is she teething (how old is she)? There are many reasons a cat may do this, and the trick is to identify the Why and then you can get her to stop
